India’s weightlifting icon Mirabai Chanu scripted another glorious chapter in her illustrious career by winning a third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. The Olympic silver medallist delivered a commanding performance in the women’s 48kg weightlifting event, securing India’s first gold medal of the Commonwealth Games and reinforcing her position as one of the country’s greatest sporting champions.
Chanu dominated the competition from the very first lift, showcasing remarkable strength and consistency. She successfully lifted 87kg in the snatch and followed it up with an impressive 107kg in the clean and jerk, registering a total of 194kg. Her performance also saw her break the Commonwealth and Commonwealth Games snatch records, while setting new Games records in the clean and jerk and overall total, leaving her competitors far behind.
This latest triumph marks a historic hat-trick of Commonwealth Games titles for the 31-year-old Manipuri athlete. Chanu had previously claimed gold at the Gold Coast 2018 and Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, which makes Glasgow 2026 her third straight victory on the biggest stage of the Commonwealth.
