Tempers Flare in Dambulla as Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Tilak Varma Involved in Heated On-Field Drama

A high-voltage India A versus Sri Lanka A clash in the ongoing tri-series at Dambulla ended in controversy after the young batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and captain Tilak Varma were involved in separate heated incidents during and after a dramatic Super Over defeat on Monday.

The match itself was a thriller. India A posted 265 before Sri Lanka A managed to level the scores at 265/9 in their 50 overs, forcing the contest into a Super Over. However, the game was overshadowed by a series of tense exchanges between the players and officials as emotions ran quite high in the closing stages of the match.

India  A skipper Tilak Verma was visibly frustrated during the proceedings and was seen arguing with the umpire on more than one occasion. Reports suggest the disputes stemmed from decisions and delays surrounding the Super Over, which was played amid concerns over fading light. The prolonged discussions added to the tension already building on the field.

After Sri Lanka A  team scored 16 runs in the Super Over, India A’s chase faltered, managing only nine runs. The defeat triggered further drama as Vaibhav Sooryavanshi became involved in a heated verbal exchange with Sri Lankan players after the match. Television footage and videos circulating on social media showed the teenage batter confronting opposition players, with the argument escalating into a brief physical altercation before teammates and officials intervened.

The incident marked a rare loss of calm from the 15-year-old prodigy, who has been one of the most talked about young talents in the indian cricket following his rapid rise through domestic cricket and the IPL.

While the result strengthened Sri Lanka A’s position in the tournament, the post-match confrontations are likely to draw attention from team management and tournament officials. The focus will now shift to whether any disciplinary action follows the chaotic scenes that brought an explosive end to an otherwise gripping contest in Dambulla.
