Realme to Halt New Product Development in China, Shifts Focus to Global Markets

Chinese smartphone brand Realme has officially confirmed that it will stop developing and launching new products in China, marking a major strategic shift as the company redirects its resources towards overseas markets. The move is a part of a broader restructuring by parent company Oppo, which is reshaping the roles of its smartphone brands to strengthen its global presence.

In an internal letter shared by Realme leadership, the company acknowledged that its business in China will be paused, with future investments focused on international markets where the brand sees stronger growth opportunities. Existing Realme users in China will continue to receive software updates, customer support, and after-sales service through the retail and service network of Oppo

The decision follows reports that Oppo is reorganising its smartphone portfolio amid slowing domestic demand sing competition, and changing market dynamics. While OnePlus is expected to narrow its focus to China, Realme will concentrate on expanding its footprint across international regions, particularly in Europe and other high-growth markets.

Realme entered the Chinese smartphone market in 2019 after establishing itself as a fast-growing brand in India and Southeast Asia. However, the company has faced increasing pressure in its home market, where competition from Huawei, Xiaomi, Honour, Vivo, and Oppo has intensified in recent years. By shifting resources overseas, Realme aims to capitalise on its stronger brand recognition and sales momentum in global markets.

Reconstruction also shows a deeper integration between Oppo and its sub-brands. Reports indicate that Realme’s independent software development efforts will gradually be merged with Oppo’s ecosystem, with ColorOS becoming the primary software platform for all future devices.

Despite ending new product launches in China, Realme emphasised that it is not shutting down as a company. Instead, the brand is repositioning itself to prioritise international expansion, where it believes there is greater long-term growth potential. The move marks one of the biggest strategic changes in the history of Realme and highlights Oppo’s evolving global smartphone strategy.
