Novak Djokovic Survives Record-Breaking Five-Hour Wimbledon Epic to Reach Semifinals

Novak Djokovic once again proved why he is regarded as one of the tennis greats, battling past Felix Auger -Aliassime in a marathon five-set quarterfinal which became the longest quarterfinal in the history of Wimbledon.

The 39-year-old Serbian emerged victorious 7-6(10), 3-6, 6-3, 6-7(4), 7-6(10-4) after an astonishing 5 hours and 15 minutes on Centre Court, which keeps his hopes of a record-extending 25th Grand Slam title alive.

The encounter between the two top players featured moments of controversy. Play was temporary holded off for the closing of centre court’s roof, a decision which frustrated both the players . Djokovic openly questioned the timing of the interruption and questioned the chair umpire, telling him, “Wimbledon is an outdoor sport,” as he felt there was still enough daylight to continue playing outside. After the brief pause in the game, play resumed under the closed roof, with the Serbian eventually regaining his rhythm and getting the better of No.3 seed Auger-Aliassime  in the decisive stage.

With the victory, Djokovic achieved another remarkable milestone by registering his 106th Wimbledon match win, surpassing the legend Roger Federer for the most men’s singles victories at the All England Club. He also became the first man in the Open Era to reach eight consecutive Wimbledon semifinals, showcasing his remarkable longevity at the highest level of sport.

Speaking after the match, Djokovic credited “a racket and a lot of heart” for helping him survive one of the toughest battles of his Wimbledon career. Despite receiving the treatment for a leg issue earlier in the contest, the 24-time Grand Slam champion displayed a great fighting spirit to outlast the powerful Canadian in a 5 sets thriller.

Djokovic will now face defending champion Jannik Sinner in a blockbuster semifinal, with a place in the Wimbledon final at stake. After surviving the longest quarterfinal the tournament has ever witnessed, the Serbian legend remains firmly in the hunt for yet another historic Grand Slam triumph.
