Kim Kardashian Brings Tom Ford-Era YSL to Her Law Roach Debut

Kim Kardashian has a new stylist, and the first look was anything but a safe introduction. For the opening night of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles, Kardashian stepped out in a black-and-gold Yves Saint Laurent gown from Tom Ford’s Fall 2004 collection, marking her first red-carpet appearance styled by Law Roach. The dress, with its shimmering sequins, intricate embroidery and sharply fitted silhouette, felt instantly recognisable as Kardashian, but its history belonged to another fashion era.

Roach confirmed the new partnership shortly after the event, sharing Kardashian’s look and referring to her as his “new client.” For a stylist whose work is closely associated with archival fashion and highly considered celebrity dressing, the choice was telling. Rather than introduce Kardashian in an unfamiliar silhouette, Roach found a piece that already speaks to the body-conscious glamour she has made part of her signature.

The YSL gown has a history of its own

The gown first appeared during Tom Ford’s final collection for Yves Saint Laurent. Its high collar, keyhole neckline, thigh-high slit and elaborate floral and landscape embroidery looked like the theatrical quality that defined Ford’s early-2000s Saint Laurent work. Beneath the black sequinned surface, a turquoise satin lining adds an unexpected flash of colour.

Kardashian kept everything else relatively restrained. Gold heels, Oscar Heyman diamond cluster earrings, a Zydo ring and a slicked-back bun allowed the dress to remain the focus.

There is another reason the gown may look familiar. Céline Dion wore the same Saint Laurent design at the 2004 World Music Awards, giving Kardashian’s appearance a place within an existing red-carpet lineage. Dion is also among Roach’s clients, making the archival choice an especially intriguing detail, although no connection between the two appearances has been confirmed.

Law Roach starts with a look that already feels like Kim

What makes the debut interesting is that Roach has not attempted to erase Kardashian’s established fashion language. The silhouette is fitted, glamorous and deliberately dramatic, but the provenance changes how the look reads.

That balance is perhaps the most revealing part of their first outing. Roach has taken a gown from a defining chapter of Saint Laurent history and placed it firmly within Kardashian’s present-day wardrobe. It is archival fashion without looking like a costume, and a vintage choice without abandoning the visual codes her audience already knows.

Kardashian also arrived at the event in Saint Laurent while Lewis Hamilton wore a contemporary look by Anthony Vaccarello, bringing two generations of the house onto the same occasion.

For now, one look is all we have from the Kardashian-Roach partnership. But choosing Tom Ford-era YSL for their first outing suggests that the archive may be less of a reference point and more of a playground for what comes next.
