Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan nearly missed the opportunity of owning an IPL franchise because he initially considered the investment to be quite risky, according to the former IPL chairman Lalit Modi. Speaking about the early days of the Indian Premier League, Modi revealed how Khan was quite hesitant about purchasing the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) franchise when the league was first played in 2008.
Recalling the franchise auction process, Modi said Shah Rukh felt that investing around Rs 20 crore was a massive financial commitment at the time. The actor reportedly had reservations about whether a cricket team could generate sufficient returns and justify such a large investment. However, Modi was quite determined to bring one of the biggest stars of Bollywood into the league, believing his presence would significantly boost the popularity and commercial appeal of the IPL.
To help ease the Khan’s concerns, Modi arranged sponsorship support from a mobile company, which reportedly provided an advance payment of around $5 million. The financial backing reduced the immediate burden of the investment and played an important role in convincing the actor to go ahead with the purchase of the Kolkata franchise.
The decision would eventually prove to be one of the most successful investments in Indian sports. Under the ownership of Shah Rukh Khan, along with the actress Juhi Chawla and businessman Jay Mehta, Kolkata Knight Riders grew into one of the most valuable and widely followed IPL teams. The franchise has enjoyed considerable success on the field, winning multiple IPL titles while building a loyal fan base across India and beyond
Modi noted that the involvement of Shah Rukh helped transform the PL into a cultural phenomenon by combining in cricket with entertainment. The star power of the actor, marketing expertise and engagement with fans played a key role in increasing the brand value of KKR over the years.
Today, KKR stands as one of the flagship franchises of the league, which makes Shah Rukh Khan once hesitant decision look remarkably farsighted. What just began as a hesitant investment has evolved into a sporting empire and one of the most successful partnerships between Bollywood and Cricket.
