India’s ride-hailing market has a new challenger. Vietnam-based Green Sm, backed by the Vingroup ecosystem, which also owns the electric manufacturer VinFast, has officially launched its all-electric taxi service in India. marking a major step in the country’s growing shift towards sustainable mobility. The company began operations in the Delhi-NCR region on June 5, coinciding with World Environment Day.
Operating under the name of Green SM Limo, the service will use a fleet of VinFast electric vehicles, including the Limo Green MPV, rather than just relying on privately owned cars . This company-controlled model differs from the aggregator approach followed by the competitors such as Ola and Uber, giving the Green SM greater control over the vehicle quality, driver standards and customer experience.
The company plans an ambitious rollout, targeting around 10,000 electric vehicles in the Delhi-NCR region alone. Green SM has also indicated that it will slowly expand it to other major Indian cities as the demand for the service grows . India becomes the fifth international market for the company after Vietnam, Laos, Indonesia, and the Philippines.
Green SM’s arrival comes at a time when the indian mobility sector is increasingly welcoming electric transportation. The service is expected to appeal to the environmentally conscious commuters while it also increases the competition in the ride-hailing industry. Reports suggest the company has been actively recruiting drivers with salary-based incentives, a model reminiscent of the premium EV fleet operators rather than the traditional ride-hailing platforms.
Promotional materials shared by the company on social media showcase its focus on eco-friendly transportation, modern electric vehicles and a premium travel experience . With VinFast side by side expanding its presence in the EV market of India, Green SM could serve as both a mobility business and a showcase for the electric vehicle brand.
As the Green Sm begins its Indian journey, all eyes will be on whether its fully electric, fleet-owned model can generate a meaningful share in a market which is for the longest time by Ola and Uber
