An Air India flight travelling from Phuket, Thailand, to Delhi encountered severe turbulence during its journey on Tuesday, which caused a sudden 300-foot loss in altitude and left several passengers and crew members injured. Despite the frightening mid-air incident, the aircraft landed safely at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi.
According to reports, Flight AI2379 was carrying 134 passengers when it experienced a brief but intense turbulence-related event during its descent towards Delhi. The pilot reported a sudden altitude loss of approximately 300 feet, which resulted in injuries to multiple people on board. Initial information suggests that at least 10 passengers and two cabin crew members sustained injuries, with one crew member reportedly suffering serious injuries.
Air India confirmed the incident in an official statement, saying the aircraft encountered an unexpected turbulence event before landing safely in Delhi. Medical assistance was immediately provided upon arrival, and the injured passengers and crew members were taken for health assessments and treatment. The airline also thanked passengers for their cooperation during the situation
Officials from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) have been informed about the incident and are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the sudden altitude change. Aviation experts note that unexpected turbulence, often caused by unstable weather conditions or strong vertical air currents, can occur even when skies appear relatively calm.
The incident has once again highlighted the importance of keeping seat belts fastened throughout a flight, even when the seat belt sign is switched off. Aviation safety experts consistently advise passengers to remain buckled while seated, as sudden turbulence can occur without warning.
