Tesla Roadster Flying Car Demo: How High Can It Fly, What Is Its Price, and When Will It Launch?

Elon Musk’s Tesla Roadster has grabbed global attention after a stunning demonstration showcased the electric sports car driving upside down, briefly flying through the air and landing safely. The demonstration, held at a SpaceX facility in McGregor, Texas, on October 15, 2026, has reignited discussions about the future of flying cars.

The next-generation Tesla Roadster combines electric vehicle engineering with aerospace-inspired technology developed with SpaceX. However, questions remain about its flying capabilities, final pricing and availability for customers.

Tesla Roadster Demonstrates Flying Capabilities

The demonstration featured the Roadster climbing a specially designed curved ramp, travelling upside down and performing a brief airborne manoeuvre before landing safely. Elon Musk shared footage on X, describing the development as a glimpse of a future with flying cars

The vehicle uses SpaceX-developed cold gas thrusters, which release pressurised gas to generate thrust. These systems are designed to help the car lift off and perform unusual movements that conventional road cars cannot do.

Despite the impressive demonstration, Tesla has not confirmed the exact height, distance or duration of the flight. The showcase also does not establish that the vehicle can sustain flight or travel long distances through the air.

Tesla Roadster Price and Expected Launch

The final price of the redesigned Tesla Roadster has not been officially confirmed. When the second generation model was announced in 2017, Tesla quoted a starting price of $200,000. Recent reports have also highlighted reservation amounts of $50,000 for the Performance version and $250,000 for the Thrust version. These figures are reservation-related amounts, not confirmed final purchase prices.

Tesla is targeting production in 2028, although the timeline could change. The model has faced repeated delays since its original announcement, leaving customers waiting years for the production version

Can Tesla Roadster Fly on Public Roads?

Despite the excitement, the Roadster’s flying capabilities remain experimental. Its airborne demonstration took place under controlled conditions, and questions surrounding safety, insurance, licensing and regulatory approval remain unanswered.

For now, the Roadster represents an ambitious vision of electric performance rather than a practical replacement for conventional transport. Its eventual success will depend on whether Tesla can deliver the promised technology in a safe, commercially available vehicle.
