Nearly four years after making the headlines with his relationship announcement, businessman and former IPL chief Lalit Modi has finally spoken about what led to his breakup with the actress and the former Miss Universe Sushmita Sen. In a recent interview, Modi has reflected on their relationship with warmth, calling Sen a very special lady, and revealing that distance ultimately drove them apart.
According to Modi, the biggest challenge was maintaining a long-distance relationship.
While his life and business interests were mainly based in London, Sen’s career and family commitments remained deeply rooted in India. Over time, the geographical separation became more and more difficult to manage, eventually leading to the end of their romance.
Modi also recalled the now-famous social media post from 2022, which publicly confirmed their relationship. He revealed that the announcement came after a light-hearted argument between the two while they were travelling together on a flight. Believing he would never actually share the post, Sen was reportedly surprised when Modi hit the public. By the time the plane landed, the internet had erupted with reactions, turning their relationship into one of the most talked-about celebrity stories of the year.
Addressing the criticism which followed, Modi strongly defended Sen against the accusations that she was dating him for financial reasons. He dismissed the gold digger label, describing her as a successful, self-made woman who never depended on anyone for money. In fact, he jokingly claimed that he was more like the “kept boyfriend” in the relationship, saying Sen usually paid for the outings herself.
Despite their breakup, Modi said he looks back on the relationship fondly and remains grateful for the time they spent together. Calling their romance a beautiful story, he emphasised that he has no regrets and continues to hold Sen in high regard.
