Zee Scores Big: FIFA World Cup 2026 Finds New Home in India

Indian Football Fans can finally breathe a sigh of relief after Zee Entertainment’s sports division, Unite8 Sports, officially secured the broadcasting rights for the FIFA World Cup 2026 in India . The landmark agreement, announced just days before the tournament kicks off on June 11 across the United States, Canada and Mexico, ends months of uncertainty surrounding the event’s availability in one of the largest untapped markets of football.

Under the deal, the FIFA World Cup 2026 will be televised on the newly launched Unite8 Sports channels, while live streaming will be available on Zee5. The agreement marks a major return for Zee to the sports broadcasting arena and provides the company with a valuable foothold in a market mainly dominated by rival broadcasters.

The Partnership extends far beyond the upcoming World Cup. Zee has acquired rights to 39 FIFA events through 2034, including the FIFA World Cup 2030, FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027, youth tournaments, futsal competitions, and other FIFA properties. The long-term nature of the agreement showcases FIFA’s commitment to expanding its reach in India, a country with a fast-growing football audience.

Reports suggest that the negotiations were straightforward. FIFA had initially sought around $100 million for the Indian rights package before lowering its expectations.

Competing bids reportedly fell well below that figure, with concerns over late-night match timings due to the North American host nations reducing the interest of the broadcasters. Eventually, Zee has emerged as the preferred partner for FIFA, securing both the television and digital rights.

The announcement has also boosted investor confidence, with the Zee shares rising following the confirmation of the deal . More importantly, it means that millions of Indians will be able to watch the biggest football event live. With the launch of multiple Unite8 sports channels and comprehensive digital coverage planned on Zee 5, the broadcaster is positioning itself as a serious player in the evolving sports media landscape of India.
