Delhi and several parts of the north and central India are reeling under an intense heatwave, with the temperatures soaring past 44 degrees Celsius in many areas of the national capital. The India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for Delhi-NCR, warning the residents of the continued extreme heat conditions over the next few days.
On Monday, Delhi recorded its hottest day of the season so far, with the Safdarjung observatory touching 43.4°C, while some localities crossed the 44°C mark. Weather officials have predicted that temperatures may climb close to 45°C later this week if dry conditions persist. Strong hot winds and clear skies are expected to worsen daytime discomfort across the region.
IMD stated that the heatwave conditions are likely to continue from Tuesday through Friday, especially during the afternoon and evening hours. Minimum temperatures have also remained unusually high, providing little relief during the night. Authorities have advised people to avoid stepping outdoors during the peak afternoon hours unless necessary.
The ongoing heatwave is not limited to Delhi alone. Several states, including Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Vidarbha, are also witnessing severe temperatures. In the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, some districts recorded temperatures above 46°C, prompting local authorities to activate emergency heat action plans and issue health advisories.
Health experts and government agencies have urged citizens to stay hydrated, wear light clothing and avoid long exposure to prevent heart-related illnesses such as dehydration and heatstroke. The Centre has also released a public health advisory asking vulnerable groups, including children and elderly people, to take extra precautions during the ongoing weather conditions.
